Ranks and Positions

When people began populating New Earth the profession of Tankards sprouted up fairly quickly. In truth the work of such a group of people was being developed on Earth long before the space colony projects were started. The question many people think of when they look up in space is "Is there life out there?" and in order to find out they always ask a certain question. "Is there water there?" Why? Well, without water man can not survive. And so when the space colonies were created they decided to begin the process of how to train people to extract water and how to find the tools to do so. The position grew and soon two organizations created a crew. Initially a Tankard was a group of people who travelled through space in order to find, map out a course to and then extract water from planets. They needed to obtain clean, fresh water or water that could be cleansed and so the process became more and more tedious as they realized that in many planets the water had chemicals mixed with it; chemicals that would take too much time to extract and would possibly end up in wasting much needed water. And so the position of Tankard became a much more romantisized profession because it was every adventurer's dream. Eventually crews began getting into trouble when pirates started attacking their ships. Before Pirates came along, the position of Cowboy and Gunner weren't present at all. Tankards merely created or followed courses in order to fill tanks up with water and return to New Earth. With Pirates however they had to fight and protect their ship and equipments as well as their supplies. It has been a general rule that you must be 20 or older to be on the ship unless you're a cabin boy or girl.

CAPTAIN (1) - The Captain is the highest responsible officer and leader acting on behalf of the ship's owner. They commanded because of skill, daring, and the ability to win against pirates and extract efficiently. They utilize the skills of their crewmembers in order to increase the success of the crew on a whole.
FIRST MATE (1) - The First Mate is the officer who ranks just below the Captain of the ship and takes over in the event that the Captain can no longer perform his duties. They are responsible to the captain for the safety and security of the ship. Responsibilities include the crew's welfare and safety.
NAVIGATOR (1) - A navigator is an individual that has a good knowledge of the universe and of science. No no, it's not too complicated. They just need to know where things are and the coordinates so that the ship can avoid being sucked into the gravity of another planet and eventually waste time and fuel. The Navigator is very important on a ship and they coopoerate with the Pilot by helping mapping out the course and lending their expertise.
PILOT (1) - The pilot is basically the driver of the ship. They all have a basic knowledge of how to navigate in space; for example what to do and what not do with a ship when they're getting sucked into an orbit or how to navigate through an astroid belt, etc.
OFFICER (2) - Officers are in control of the lower positions of Gunner, and regular Tankard/Cowboy. They police everyone and make sure they are doing what they're supposed to do on board and on land.
GUNNER - Gunners are skilled men who aimed the guns on a ship. They man the artillery and specialize in aiming, firing, and resetting the large guns in the space ship. In some instances a gunner would give orders to other gunners on how to set their guns during a broadside but that's usually if Officers aren't present. They're valued for their marksmanship.
CABIN BOY/GIRL - The cabin boy/girl is typically a young boy/girl of privileged birth who is sent to sea to learn the trade. Typically the cabin boy waits upon the officers of the ship. In some instances he may act as the Captain's servant. The cabin boy will run messages and errands for the officers. Because he is an apprentice of sorts, he is also expected to learn all aspects of the space/water trade. The cabin boy works long hard hours and may be expected to do the work of the Extracter.
COWBOY - The term cowboy is just an endearing term for a regular Tankard. Their jobs consists of maintaining the ship- from wiping to oiling the parts in the engine room, as well as helping Extracters board fuel and water tankers. They're like the galactic police force and often do most of the footwork needed.
EXTRACTER - The extracter is a position that started this whole water business. These people extract water by pumping them into tanks. Soon pirates began attacking them and that's when Cowboys became necessary. Because the focus of Cowboys are to protect the group, the job of Extracter is still neccessary.

When Tankards came to New Earth with their supplies of water and the water was sold off to organizations with very little for the common citizens, groups of people found it troublesome and offensive. They were disgusted that so little of the population made money from the water business and so they decided to stick their nose deep into it. They hijacked Tankard ships, intercepted drop offs, and eventually began stealing water and selling it off to the everyday citizens cheaply, then to the government/organizations at a high price. Pirates quickly became the number one enemy. Because of the wealth they obtained for themselves the number of pirate crews extended from one to three, however some individuals travel through space without a crew.

CAPTAIN (1) - The Captain is the highest responsible pirate leader acting on behalf of himself and his crew. He leads the crew and gives the orders!
QUARTERMASTER (1) - The Quartermaster is the second in command. They are responsible for rations, weapons, and punishment. They deal more closely with the rest of the crew than the captain. In fact they take off pressure from the captain so that he or she could remain focus on the crew's general goal (s). The Quartermaster is also a Navigator, and in general they hold a great deal of responsibility.
PILOT (1) - The pilot is the person steering the ship. They communicate one on one with the navigator - for Pirates, the navigator is the Quartermaster. The Pilot needs to have knowledge of ships and space. The Pilot gives orders to everyone below their rank in regards to steering the ship or navigating it through treacherous areas or times; ie, battle. It isn't unheard of for the Captain to argue with the Pilot, nor is it unheard of to see a Pilot being removed from his or her position violently.
SHIPSWAIN (2) - These are officers/pirates who oversee their inferiors/juniors. The relationship between the Shipswain and the gunners/pirates is that of Senior Officer versus Junior Officer. Shipswains execute the orders given from above and they reinforce the rules.
GUNNER - These are the most essential members. They man the artillery and specialize in aiming, firing, and resetting the large guns in the space ship. While each pirate has arms, the gunners are skilled in the weapons of the ships' main weapons. While in battle, they give the pilot enough space to get the entire crew away from danger.
PIRATE - A pirate is just a general rank for ... well, the pirates. They're those who basically do everything else needed. Gunners are important but regular ol' henchmen and associates are as effective and neccessary as a Shipswain.

The ranks below can be held by pirates or tankards or general civilians. Although the site is focused more on Tankards and Pirates, Civilian jobs are accepted as well primarily because it's more realistic, and secondly because people are often employed by the crews regardless of previous affiliations. If you can come up with another position that isn't on the list then please chose 'Other' in the Application. Explain what job you would want in the begining of your role play sample and/or comment in the f.a.q. question once accepted. You're not limited by the list below, but they give a good idea of common professions.

DOCTOR - Doctors are needed on both sides and are often employed for either Tankards or Pirates. They travel with the crew and are compensated in one fashion or another. Pirate crews tend to kidnap and force Doctors to work for them because they are highly valued.
ENGINEER - An engineer is a skilled technical professional. They create the plans and structures for ships, colonies, weapons, etc and employ Artisans to build it. They are employed by Captains or Ship Owners.
COOK - A cook is another highly valued position. If you can manage to cook a few decent meals without getting anyone sick or killed, then you're possibly everyone's favorite person! The cooks don't make a list of supplies and ask the Tankards or Pirates to go fetch them, instead they make do with what they have.
EXPLORER - An explorer! They're basically adventurers, people who travel and observe the environmen out of curiosity. They risk their lives to learn more about space. They employ pirates or Tankards to show them the ropes, however usually an adventurer would prefer to travel with a Tankard if safety is a huge importance. If they're as reckless as their job sounds they'd have no problems with being around pirates. Some might end up being kidnapped or killed in combat so it's a risky way to spend your life.
SCIENTISTS - Seriously? In this day scientists are completely facinated by the happenings of the world and travel to test and experiment and observe the environment for the advancement of mankind. They're also paid for it too, so it's always a nice incentive to hop on board with a Tankard or Pirate. There are Senior Scientists and Junior ones, who are basically interns/people studying under a more experienced scientist.
ARTISAN - An Artisan is a skilled manual worker who crafts items that may be functional or strictly decorative, including furniture, clothing, jewelry, household items, and tools. They craft things such as weapons, tanks, ships (in groups of course), etc. It is a broad field but Artisans are one of the most useful people around. They also repair; which makes your normal ship repairer an Artisan in this day and age.
ENTERTAINERS - Being in space with a bunch of people can be boring even if you have television and radio to listen to. And so that's where the musicians and actors come along. Any type of entertainer is often glorified by either side because they represent a fun side to travelling with their crew.
SHIP OWNER (2) - Basically a Ship owner is someone who owns a ship. They pay Engineers enough money to buy the services of artisans, and create their perfect ship. The Ship owner/the Organization employs their crew and when the crew goes out to extract the water, they take a large percentage and sell the rest to the public at a very high price. Pirate crews are the owners of their own ship and they only keep enough water to sustain themselves and they sell at a cheap price to the public.
